Literacy is not a relic.

Brandi Coleman, our 2025 Healthy Communities fellow, published her first op-ed on the concerning drop of reading intentions among students. According to her experience and work, the current generation of students prefers to listen rather than read books or articles. Some educational institutions/places replaced physical books with QR codes. AI and digital devices are increasingly reducing the reading time that these generations spend.

“Critical thinking, empathy, and different perspective are at risk. If we can’t read deeply, we can’t understand nuance. And if we can’t understand nuance, we’re not prepared to lead, to vote or to defend our rights.”

Brandi encourages us to remind younger generation that one book can change their lives.
