Lessons from Green Accountability: Scaling People-Driven Climate Innovation

Community innovation alone is not enough. Lasting climate accountability requires institutional pathways.

The Aspen Global Innovators Group and CIVIC convened civil society leaders, funders, researchers, development practitioners, and climate accountability champions to reflect on the journey and lessons of the Green Accountability Platform and explore what comes next for people-driven climate action.

We heard powerful examples:

  • Women’s leaders in Senegal securing the first-ever statutory municipal climate adaptation budget allocation in Diaoulé.
  • Climate finance analysis in Mexico leading to the removal of “greenwashed” expenditures from a federal climate budget.
  • Civic evidence in Brazil helping trigger legal enforcement mechanisms in REDD+ implementation.
  • Monitoring systems in Bangladesh becoming embedded within local governance structures.

The future of climate accountability will be built not only through innovation, but through stronger pathways that connect local solutions to systems-level change. Watch the session.
