The Gender Gap in Health Systems Leadership

Adaeze Oreh | June 5, 2025

Adaeze Oreh, 2019 New Voices Senior Fellow, spoke on the civil society engaged-panel, “Advancing Universal Health Coverage in a Changing World- the Case for Gender-Responsive Health Systems“ at the 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva.

She reflects on the gender leadership gap, with only 25% of women making up health sector leadership despite their higher rates of participation. “Competence, capability, and commitment are clearly not the issue,” she echoes. She points to the social determinants of a woman’s fate: How perceived gender norms and sidelining are the true systemic barriers to improved organizational outcomes and performance. She further outlines her ideas and recommendations to navigate these gendered obstacles.
