In an interview for Voice of America, Danjuma Adda, our 2023 Advanced Advocacy Fellow as well as our 2020 New Voices Fellow, shares his journey with Hepatitis and the importance of seeking treatment.
As per WHO estimates, about 2 billion people in the world are exposed to Hepatitis B infection with Africa carrying 65% of that global burden. Danjuma notes that even though new infections are declining slightly, mortality is on the rise. For Danjuma, losing his mother to Hepatitis while fighting his own battle, gave him the impetus to “change the narrative” for others in his community. His organization now not only provides free vaccinations against Hepatitis but is also actively working to create awareness and reduce the stigma associated with this disease.
Ultimately, Danjuma calls for people to adopt healthy lifestyles and seek treatment and care if diagnosed with Hepatitis.
