Trauma into Transformation

In this op-ed for the Courier Journal, our 2026 Healthy Communities Fellow, Christopher 2X highlights the crucial role healthcare professionals, specifically doctors, nurses, and trauma team members, play in treating the emotional and psychological wounds of children exposed to gun violence and trauma. Christopher 2X emphasizes that medical teams who treat gun violence victims do far more than treat physical injuries; they witness firsthand the long-term trauma experienced by young victims and their families. The piece spotlights how doctors, nurses, and surgeons can serve as vital mentors and sources of hope for youth living in communities impacted by high rates of violence.

Drawing on his experience leading the Future Healers Kiddos Program (developed in partnership with 2X Game Changers and the University of Louisville School of Medicine), 2X demonstrates how engaging trauma-exposed children early in healthcare education allows them to find a purpose out of their trauma, inspiring them to pursue careers in medicine and community healing. The authors urge the broader community and healthcare systems to support early-childhood trauma intervention, reinforcing that mitigating childhood trauma requires collaborative partnerships between medical professionals and frontline community leaders.
