Healthier SNAP Standards

Moises Arjona Jr. | août 26, 2026

Aspen Healthy Communities Fellow Moises Arjona Jr. recently penned an opinion piece for The Hill titled “I grew up on food stamps. That’s why I support healthier SNAP standards.” Grounded in his lived experience as a recipient of food assistance during his childhood and his leadership as CEO of Unidos Contra La Diabetes in Texas’s Rio Grande Valley, Arjona advocates for updating Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) guidelines to emphasize nutritional quality. Drawing a clear line between childhood food insecurity, chronic health challenges like type 2 diabetes, and long-term community well-being, he makes a compelling case for policy standards that not only alleviate hunger but actively nourish families and prevent chronic disease.

Arjona argues that federal food policy and SNAP standards should actively incentivize nutrient-rich foods, making the healthier choice the affordable, accessible choice for low-income families. Emphasizing that changing long-standing dietary habits requires more than policy updates, Arjona points to the need for culturally relevant education and structural support to create sustainable health transformation.
